In Caliban's World In her penetrating critique of my earlier theories about nationalism in Arena Journal no. 14, Joan Cocks pointed out that my fatal flaw from the American perspective was probably 'an engaged attitude ... unpalatable for liberals and leftists alike'. (1) This deficiency was compounded by other sins as well, like being too confined to the British cultural arena, and remaining over-influenced by marxist historical materialism. Although Cocks distanced herself from most of these attitudes, she could not resist a residual verdict of the same kind. 'Is The Break-Up of Britain a nationalist manifesto?' she asked, following the question up with another. 'To see nationalism as false but right has tangled logical implications for the seer; the ability to be a nationalist is not one of them.' This observation was shrewd, yet mistaken. And my answer today would still be: 'Yes it is: guilty as charged!'--which is a good place to start in order to continue this dialogue. There were tangled implications and contradictions when she was writing in 1997-8, certainly, especially one big one, to which I will return later. But today there are fewer, and since September 11 they seem to me far less tangled and confusing than before.
